3D Slope Sensitivity Analysis using SVSlope®

May 1, 2011

SVSlope® 3D was utilized as part of a master's thesis at Universita' degli Studi di Salerno in Italy. The thesis primarily investigated the 2D and 3D factors of safety utilizing slip surfaces of different shape and different strength properties of the soil. The study found that the results of the software were reasonable and help to understand the differences between any 2D and 3D analysis.

The comments received back relating to the software indicated a very intuitive and user-friendly interface. The student found it easy to implement complex geometry and soil heterogeneity and liked the possibility to assign user-defined irregular slip surfaces. It was found that meaningful runs were obtained with only a few days effort.

The comparison between 2D and 3D factors of safety in the performed analysis indicated that 2D may be adequate for computations with relatively simple geometries of both ground and slip surfaces. [However], the factors of safety related to complex 3D geometries and stratigraphies are difficult to compute on the basis of 2D analyses. In these latter cases, 3D estimates (through 3D modeling) are surely more reliable.
