Windows 7 Multiple User Configuration Issues

Windows 7 has made it easier than ever to configure virtual Windows environments for offices with multiple engineers. This, combined with our network licensing options, makes it possible to share resources more easily than ever. This support document describes some of the configuration issues you might run into when configuring your virtual environment for use with SVOffice 2009.

Please note that SoilVision is not supported on Windows 7.

NETWORK VS SINGLE–USER DONGLES

Single-user dongles are the most common type of purchase made for SVOffice 2009. While these work fine with individual PCs and laptops, they can be difficult to manage in larger offices, especially where use of SVOffice might be shared between more than one user, or where software is managed by an IT department. In such cases, a network dongle may be the superior solution. The License Manager can be centrally managed from a protected server, which also protects the dongle itself. The license can be requested when needed from any computer with SVOffice installed (or, in the case of a fully networked environment, from the virtual computer you log in to). Generally speaking, we do not support the use of single-user dongles in virtual environments, although they may work in some cases.

CONFIGURATION FILES

SVOffice 2009, like many applications, has some customization options. All of them are stored in the user's application storage directory, with one exception. The file NETHASP.INI, which is required for network dongles, must be located in the same directory as the application. There are two ways to configure this file:

If you have administrator privileges, you may configure NETHASP.INI directly from SVOffice 2009, in the Authorization dialog. The dialog supports configuration of the IP address where the License Manager is stored. Alternatively, you can hand-edit NETHASP.INI if required.

If you do not have administrator privileges, you can still configure NETHASP.INI from SVOffice 2009, but it will be stored in a different place. Windows 7 implements a virtual storage directory, which acts as a "mirror" to hold per-user copies of files that users are not allowed to change. This means that each user would have to configure their "copy" of SVOffice 2009 the first time they run it, or have their IT department create a script to duplicate the master copy of NETHASP.INI when they log in. This virtual storage directory is normally found at \<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\SoilVision\SVOffice 2009.

Please note that separate copies of NETHASP.INI exist for both SVOffice and FlexPDE, so the above information should be used to configure both copies. For IT purposes, we recommend the first option - work with your IT department to configure NETHASP.INI, store the result in the real applications directory, and arrange to back it up somehow. Then, remove any virtual copies that may have been created in the user directories.
