4th International Conference on Unsaturated Soils
Phoenix, AZ, USA
The fundamental concepts and theories associated with unsaturated soil mechanics will be introduced and advanced to the point of application in geotechnical engineering practice. Attention will be given to the central role of the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) for the implementation of unsaturated soil mechanics. The course covers the measurement, estimation, interpretation, and application of the SWCC as related to geotechnical engineering problems dealing with seepage, shear strength, and volume change. Each of these areas will be discussed and engineering solutions described in terms of the appropriate partial differential equation that must be solved. Examples of numerical simulations regarding seepage, shear strength, and volume change will be presented.

This short course is designed to provide an overview of the latest numerical techniques used in unsaturated soil applications. An examination of the theoretical concepts of applying unsaturated soil technology to practice as well as the creation of 2D and 3D finite element models for common problems will be covered.
In particular, issues related to common unsaturated applications such as flow through earth dams, coupled heave/swell modeling, as well as mining applications such as modeling heap leach operations, waste rock flow, cover performance design modeling. The advantages of automatic mesh generation, automatic mesh refinement, and automatic time-step refinement will be covered. Advanced numerical techniques used to reduce convergence issues will also be covered. Case studies showing the application of these numerical concepts to real-world design will be covered.
