SVOffice™: Next Generation Geotechnical Software

Large Strain Consolidation

In This Issue

SoilVision Systems Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of 1D, 2D (pseudo and quasi) and 3D (pseudo and quasi) large strain consolidation software. The ability to perform a fully coupled large strain consolidation analysis has been integrated into SVOffice2009™ using both of the existing SVFlux™ and SVSolid™ flow and stress deformation software packages. The release is the result of many years of work and collaboration with industry partners in the mining industry to provide an improved tool for modeling soft soils such as mine tailings. The tool represents the implementation of large strain consolidation technologies which are required for the excessive volume change encountered during the dewatering of mine tailings. The new software can be utilized by geotechnical consultants and mine planners in the planning of such facilities or in the analysis of existing tailings facilities.

1D Consolidation Tutorial & Verification Benchmarks & Example Models

This tutorial introduces some of features of modeling large-strain consolidation using the Somogyi theory included in the SVOffice software. A modified Townsend B is utilized for the example. The following features will be demonstrated through the example:

  • Large-strain consolidation
  • Multiple steps of continuous filling
  • Capped surcharge applied on the tailings surface
  • Multiple layers with a non-uniform initial void ratio.
